Bespoke mathematics tutoring to meet the needs of each and every student

Home: Welcome

Why choose me?

Located in Nottingham, I have been teaching for 25 years, 13 of those years as deputy headteacher and maths lead. I have extensive experience throughout key stage two and have successfully taught year six for over a decade. I have been a maths specialist (MAST) since 2014 and am fully aware of the requirements needed for a pupil to be secondary ready. My philosophy, even in the classroom, is not about passing assessments such as SATs (that is a positive by-product), but it is about pupils learning the fundamental building blocks to becoming confident mathematicians, with the ultimate goal of developing a lifelong curiosity for maths. This is my goal for every child under my tutorage. Connecting with my students is paramount; to do that, building positive relationships is crucial. Students enjoy my warm and engaging style of teaching. I am fun and caring in equal measure.

The students I have tutored to date have all made repeat bookings and many of them I have worked with for up to a year, indicating that they and their parents feel positive about the mathematical experiences I offer - see testimonies below.

What I offer

My initial session will give me the chance to speak to the student and to the parents/carers to establish what the student’s own goals are, with subsequent sessions reflecting those discussions.

Session Design

After the initial ‘getting to know the student’s needs’ session, subsequent tutoring will be tailored to meet the needs of the individual. This could include developing their confidence in arithmetic procedures such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division but it could also include exploring and developing a range of mathematical concepts and topics such as fractions, percentages, geometry and statistics. What ever the student needs, I will create a programme for them. Some pupils might start with physical manipulatives such as place value counters to support them, whereas other may feel confident with the use of visual images to support them before moving onto abstract concepts.

Paired learning

Some students may benefit from sharing sessions with another student in order to develop their mathematical thinking through paired discussion and through collaborative activities. Parent/carer(s) will need to organise this but I am happy to support where needed.

Location of sessions

I will come to the student’s residence to run the sessions. A parent/carer will need to be in the property but are not expected to stay in the room unless they wish to. Through the school I am contracted to, I have complete DBS checks; these certificates can be shown on request.

We had been looking for a tutor for our daughter for sometime and once we heard that Mr Mawer was tutoring we knew our search was over! Before her lessons, our daughter dreaded maths and the whole concept caused her a lot of stress and anxiety. After her first session, our daughter's whole outlook on maths changed and week by week her confidence grew and grew. We have not only seen a change in our daughter's attitude but her knowledge has gone from strength to strength and she no longer hides from maths but wants to independently try to tackle any challenges she faces. Ian has a huge enthusiasm and energy for teaching and he has a way of lifting our daughter's mood instantly and making maths on a Sunday afternoon fun! I couldn’t recommend Ian enough and I hope we get the opportunity to use his skills in the future.

Mr Mawer has legendary status in our household. A wonderful teacher and person. The main thing we wanted was for our daughter to feel more confident with maths as it seems to move so fast at school. We feel like she’ll go to secondary school now feeling like maths isn’t something to be scared of but something she can do. We just wish she could see Ian every day because as well as feeling better at maths she was always happy and lighter after spending time with him.

Hannah & Thomas

Imogen's confidence with maths has improved so much through Ian's tutoring. Ian has taken the time to understand Imogen's needs as well as her personality and learning style. His patience and mixture of learning techniques has improved her grasp of the subject, as well as having fun along the way.

Emma Scott

Mr Mawer is the best. He is great at helping people understand and makes maths fun.

Imi (student)

Ian taught both of our girls in the past and their progress through the year was exceptional. Taught in a way that set them both at ease (although at different abilities) and made them have the confidence to ask questions when needed and believe in themselves, I would recommend Ian to anyone who wants to give their child the extra support and encouragement to achieve their potential.

All 3 of our children have been taught maths by Ian in year 5 and 6. I have had the privilege of watching him teach many times. His enthusiasm, experience and ability clearly shine through, enabling him to communicate, teach and connect with children of all abilities.
