Bespoke mathematics tutoring to meet the needs of each and every student
Why choose me?
Located in Nottingham, I have been teaching for 25 years, 13 of those years as deputy headteacher and maths lead. I have extensive experience throughout key stage two and have successfully taught year six for over a decade. I have been a maths specialist (MAST) since 2014 and am fully aware of the requirements needed for a pupil to be secondary ready. My philosophy, even in the classroom, is not about passing assessments such as SATs (that is a positive by-product), but it is about pupils learning the fundamental building blocks to becoming confident mathematicians, with the ultimate goal of developing a lifelong curiosity for maths. This is my goal for every child under my tutorage. Connecting with my students is paramount; to do that, building positive relationships is crucial. Students enjoy my warm and engaging style of teaching. I am fun and caring in equal measure.
The students I have tutored to date have all made repeat bookings and many of them I have worked with for up to a year, indicating that they and their parents feel positive about the mathematical experiences I offer - see testimonies below.
What I offer
My initial session will give me the chance to speak to the student and to the parents/carers to establish what the student’s own goals are, with subsequent sessions reflecting those discussions.
Session Design
After the initial ‘getting to know the student’s needs’ session, subsequent tutoring will be tailored to meet the needs of the individual. This could include developing their confidence in arithmetic procedures such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division but it could also include exploring and developing a range of mathematical concepts and topics such as fractions, percentages, geometry and statistics. What ever the student needs, I will create a programme for them. Some pupils might start with physical manipulatives such as place value counters to support them, whereas other may feel confident with the use of visual images to support them before moving onto abstract concepts.
Paired learning
Some students may benefit from sharing sessions with another student in order to develop their mathematical thinking through paired discussion and through collaborative activities. Parent/carer(s) will need to organise this but I am happy to support where needed.
Location of sessions
I will come to the student’s residence to run the sessions. A parent/carer will need to be in the property but are not expected to stay in the room unless they wish to. Through the school I am contracted to, I have complete DBS checks; these certificates can be shown on request.
